From the Medical Code of Ethics

The Medical Code of Ethics was passed at the 2nd General Medical Assembly in 1991. It was significantly amended at the 3rd General Medical Assembly in 1993 and at the 7th General Medical Assembly in 2003 in order to update the Code according to the current developments, e.g. new provisions on the relations between the physician and the medical industry were introduced.

VOCATION OF THE PHYSICIAN*

• The physician's vocation is the protection of human life and health, the prevention of diseases, the treatment of patients and the relief of suffering. The physician shall not use his/her medical knowledge and skills for any purpose being in contradiction with that vocation.
• The greatest ethical imperative for the physician is the welfare of the patient.

QUALITY OF MEDICAL CARE

• The physician should perform all diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive procedures with due exactitude and devoting the necessary time.

RESPECT FOR PATIENT'S RIGHTS

• The physician should approach patients with consideration, respecting their personal dignity, right to intimacy and privacy.

MEDICAL CONFIDENTIALITY

• The physician has the duty to maintain confidentiality. Information obtained in the course of physician's professional duties concerning the patient and his background is to be kept confidential. The death of the patient does not release the physician from the duty of maintaining confidentiality.

PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

• It is the duty of every physician to continually update and develop professional knowledge and skills as well as to share them with co-workers.

RELATIONS WITH THE INDUSTRY

• The physician should not accept benefits from representatives of the medical industry, if it could influence objectivism of his professional judgment or undermine trust in the medical profession.

*Whenever the term "physician" is used it also refers to a "dental practitioner".
